Greg Curnoe (1936-1992) was a highly revered artist, bookmaker and competitive cyclist. 

Sadly his life was cut short when he was killed during a group ride outside of London, Ontario. 

Curnoe remains an important and singular voice in 20th century Canadian Art. It is hard to associate him with the movements that are canonized in this country.

The artist has more in common with Jim Dine; both artist explored Pop art in a personal way choosing icons to repeatedly revisit with their own distinctive palette and casual aesthetic. 

This is a charming work on paper by Curnoe from the late 1960's. He was fascinated by the archetypes, publicity and aesthetics that surrounded sport, especially cycling. 

Curnoe represented Canada at the Venice Biennale in 1976.

The Art Gallery of Ontario holds the archives of Greg Curnoe.
